About

This site is an exploration of the author’s fascination with bikes, and a search to find others who share this fascination.

The name, jkspinnin’, is inspired by Matthew Mcconaughey’s j.k.livin brand. I first heard the term about a year ago, and it kinda stuck with me. Later, my mind morphed it into “just keep spinnin’” as a phrase to repeat as I rode my fixie–an attempt to prevent the awkward jolts when I tried to freewheel. And now, I’ve abstracted it into a mantra that applies to me on every ride. Just Keep Spinnin’. Don’t turn around, don’t slow down, don’t let bad weather or a bad mood keep you off the bike.

Hopefully this blog will provide some insight into the mind of an avid cyclist and illustrate connections and commonalities in the cycling and in the general community.

Car Talk gas tax

Give this snippet of Car talk a listen--I think Tom and Ray present a compelling argument for a national gasoline tax.  http://www.cartalk.com/piplayer/cartalkplayer.html?play=09smil.xml The idea is simple--the gasoline tax keeps prices at the pump higher, thereby reducing demand on foreign oil. Money raised is used to fund more sustainable transportation. The catch? The ...

Winter traction

The evolution of winter traction: Baling twine That's right, baling twine. Why? Because is was available and plentiful. My brother and I used this on our coaster-brake equipped BMX bikes to gain traction in packed and powder snow. My knowledge of this technique was handed down by my dad,  who also used ...
